Beyonce’s musical tributes to American football

The singer will perform at this year’s Super Bowl half-time show and has more American football related songs than you might think.

NO DOUBT MANY will be keeping a close eye on Beyonce during next Sunday’s Super Bowl half-time show to ensure there’s no repeat of the lip-syncing controversy from Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony.

Mind you, here at TheScore.ie we don’t really care if she does because, at least that way, her performance will finish on time and we can get back to watching football at an ungodly hour.

However, while we weren’t initially sure about the former Destiny’s Child star as the half-time performer, a remarkable number of her songs seem to be related to American football. Here are some of our favourites.

Single coverage (put a Super Bowl Ring on it)

This may well be Beyonce’s most famous song but it is also her most obvious ode to the sport of gridiron. Sadly, for the likes of Tom Brady and Matt Ryan, it won’t be happening this year.

C-Ray-zy in love

With just 1,143 yards in the regular season, it looks as if Ray Rice’s time as an elite NFL running back may be numbered. However, he’s been such great servant to the Ravens over the years, Beyonce couldn’t ignore him.

Buffalo Bills, Bills, Bills

She may have grown up in Houston Texas but this Destiny’s Child track makes it clear that her NFL allegiances lie in the state of New York with Ryan Fitzpatrick and crew. Unlike Beyonce, however, the Bills are unlikely to trouble a Super Bowl any time soon.

Run the world

Since Colin Kaepernick came in for the concussed Alex Smith in November, he’s put in some unbelievable performances, especially with his feet and the 49ers quarterback gives this tribute two thumbs up.

If I were a boy

It’s not just the NFL that fascinates Beyonce, she’s also a big fan of college football. She penned this little number after hearing the latest twist in the Manti Te’o story which revealed the linebacker was actually talking to a man when he thought he was on the phone to his girlfriend.

Halo

Beyonce, of course, hasn’t forgotten about last year’s NFL golden boy, Tim Tebow. He might not have a job with the New York Jets for much longer but his very public faith should help him stay strong.

Survivor

Ray Lewis will be (allegedly) bringing down the curtain on a 17-year career in the NFL with an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII. Beyonce knows you don’t play at this level for so long without being survivor.

Bootlegylicious

She doesn’t like to boast about it but Beyonce loves the x’s and o’s of American football which is why she worries about Chip Kelly’s transition from college football to the NFL with no experience. As one colleague said, why else would she sing “Chip Kelly, can you handle this? I don’t think you can handle this new NFL head coaching role.”
